Cookies: Date vs Chocolate

I was listening to an audio book version of 'The Secret Lives of Dresses' the other day and the character made some cookies.
Since then I couldn't get the idea of cookies out of my head... so I caved. I put down my exam revision notes and made some.
This recipe is slightly modified from a recipe I found online here.

My dad gets bad headaches from chocolate so rather than making a huge batch of cookies that he can't eat I am making two versions of the cookie. I am making a batch of choc chip cookies and date cookies from this recipe. I will keep you updated on which goes better!

Lets get started!

Ingredients:
  • 125 grams softened butter (chopped)
  • 1/4 cup caster sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar - I used an unrefined molasses sugar from the company 'Billingtons'
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 1/2 cups self raising flour (sifted)
  • 3/4 cup chocolate - I mixed cacao nibs, Cadbury dairy milk and some left over Easter chocolate because that is what I had on hand. Any chocolate will do but cooking chocolate is best.
  • 1/2 cup chopped dates

 Method:
  1. Pre-heat over 180 degrees Celsius
  2.  Cream butter and sugar.
  3.  Add egg and vanilla essence; beat well.
  4.  At this point i halved the flour and mixed in the dates and chocolate into the flour in the separate bowls.
  5. Mix in flour and choc chips with the egg, sugar and butter mixture with a wooden spoon. - I halved this and mixed them separately. I also found that i need to add a dash of milk to get the right consistency!
  6. Spoon onto a lined baking tray (1 heaped teaspoonful per cookie)
  7.  Bake for 8-12 minutes until just golden.
  8. Place on a cooling rack

All that is left is to enjoy!

As for whether the Date or the Choc Chip Cookies turned out better? Well I would have to say it is a draw.
If you're a sticky date pudding lover you will go mad for the date cookies.
If you're a chocoholic like me... well there is no choice!

Have a lovely day!

P.S. I stuffed up and mixed the egg and vanilla in with the sugar and butter straight away but it still turned out. Don't freak out if you do this!

P.P.S. feel free to watch my v-log of making these cookies below or here!
